One thing that I have noticed in working with the energy in people’s homes is that sometimes they are very resistant to clearing their clutter. What I have discovered is that clutter is many times, a metaphor for not wanting to move forward in certain areas of life. We need space for energy and growth. De-cluttering is a way to remove blocks that are stopping the flow of energy or chi. When we surround ourselves with outdated, unused and unloved items, our lives start to mirror that stuck energy.

Tips on where to begin: if you have read the book, “The Incredible Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo, she will say that your clothes should be first and then your books. Activating your body (clothes) and mind (books) first, makes the process easier in her philosophy. I always start with an intention. In what area do I want to move forward in my life? For me, it was business so I started in my office. The desk is particularly important if you work at home, as you spend a lot of time there and paperwork tends to build up. Interesting how the more clutter that gets cleared, the more energy, enthusiasm and clarity you have in your life.

Entryways are priorities in de-cluttering. If it is hard for you to get to or through your front door, your “good” chi or energy is most likely having the same problem. You want your entry to be open and welcoming. Do not put cacti or spiky plants next to your main entry door, I have a wind chime that makes pleasant sounds whenever the wind blows.

Closets are a particular challenge for me as almost everything I wear is black. It’s important to have good lighting!  If you don’t wear it, get it out of the closet. If you are having a hard time letting it go, put it in storage for a couple of months. If you haven’t missed it in that time, give it away and let someone else get some use out of it.

Dealing with clutter is usually where I start with my clients, depending on how much stuff they have accumulated. Feng Shui results will not be the same if you are hanging onto things that no longer serve you and keep you stuck where you are.
